A short guide about Riviere du Rempart
Located in the north east of Mauritius is the district of Riviere du Rempart, whose capital is Mapou – but her largest town today is a coastal village that has become the tourist resort of Grand Bay. Initially it was a small fishing village, but now it boasts the presence of a small golf course, 3 hotels and a very friendly welcome awaits people visiting the village.
This beautiful paradise of Riviere du Rempart includes many islands – like the near shore Amber Island, and the Maunick Islands. Also to the north of Pointe l'Hortal are the uninhabited offshore islands of Gunner's Quoin, Flat Island and Serpent Island just to name a few.
Enjoy a scenic self-drive tour through Riviere du Rempart; as it is linked by two roads – one to Port Louis and the other to Grand Port. When travelling between some of the big coastal towns you’ll find that Grand Gaube makes a very interesting drive along the scenic coastal route to Cap Malheureux and Grand Bay. Stop for beach picnics along the way at some of the touristic places like; Plaine des Papayes and Antoinette, where the first indentured labourers from India settled.
