A short guide about New South Wales

If you’re visiting New South Wales, then you will discover it is Australia’s most diverse State – home to the country’s largest and most cosmopolitan city, Sydney. This state was founded in 1788 and originally comprised much of the Australian mainland, as well as Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Island, although some early governors considered it also included New Zealand as well, until British officials pointed out this was not so.

The State of New South Wales has five World Heritage Sites to explore, with the Sydney Opera House being the most recent addition – making Sydney Harbour one of the state's favourite postcard scenes. New South Wales also has a string of sparkling beaches stretching from north to south, which includes excellent city beaches for sunbathing and surfing, such as Bondi Beach Tamarama and Bronte. But if you’re here for the waves – then set off for Byron Bay at the northern tip of NSW, better known as 'the surfing Mecca'.

A visit to the state’s capital; Sydney, it provides a superb introduction to New South Wales – with its glamorous beaches and appetite for the fine things in life.
