A short guide about Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon is part of the Watarrka National Park and is an amazing place to visit while in the Northern Territory of Australia. It is at the western end of the George Gill Range, just over 300km southwest of Alice Springs.

This picturesque landscape of rock-holes, rugged ranges and moist gorges is a refuge for many plants and animals, and the park is a conservation area as well as a major attraction of the Red Centre of Australia. What is so amazing about this place is that the walls of Kings Canyon are over 300m high and that you can actually go for a guided walk along the rim of Kings Canyon and through the Lost City and Garden of Eden. Part of the gorge is a sacred Aboriginal site and visitors are discouraged from walking off the walking tracks.

There are two walks at Kings Canyon; one of the walks traces the bottom of the gorge along Kings Creek and there is a platform at the end where you can view the walls of the canyon. The ‘Kings Canyon Rim Walk’ traces the top of the canyon and is a 6km loop, taking about 3 to 4 hours. It starts with a steep climb at the beginning which locals call "Heartbreak Hill" taking visitors up to the top, with spectacular views of the gorge below and of the surrounding landscape.
