A short guide about Telegraph Station

When visiting the – ‘The Alice’ you can take a tour of the Old Telegraph Station – the best preserved of the 12 stations along the Overland Telegraph Line. Today - mail can be sent through the Telegraph/ Post Office, which is stamped with a special franking stamp.

‘The Alice Springs Telegraph Station Historical Reserve’ marks the original site of the first European settlement in Alice Springs. The telegraph station was sited near what was thought to be a permanent waterhole in the normally dry Todd River and was optimistically named Alice Springs after the wife of the former Postmaster General of South Australia, Sir Charles Todd.

Construction began in 1871 and by 1872 it was relaying messages between Darwin and Adelaide during its operation for 60 years, it then served as a school for Aboriginal children. Many of the buildings have been restored and fitted out in the tradition of the late 1800's and early 1900's period.
