The state of Queensland was named in 1859 to honour ‘Queen Victoria’ of the United Kingdom, and being such a popular woman – they also named the southern Australian state of ‘Victoria’ after her as well. But besides the eventful times of European discovery and settlement; Queensland has a history that spans back thousands of years with a lengthy indigenous presence.

Visit the Gold Coast – Australia’s vacation Playground – its excellent surfing waves and splendid white sand beaches stretch 57kms from Main Beach to Coolangatta. Heading an hour north is the city of Brisbane – the state capital of Queensland. The coast between Brisbane and Fraser Island is called the "Sunshine Coast" and its "capital" is Noosa Heads – a beachside town with many hotels and backpackers. Out in this hinterland area you will find the ancient volcano cores of the Glasshouse Mountains to be a fascinating destination.

Tour the Great Barrier Reef and explore its coral region that stretches over 2600km, making it the longest barrier reef in the world, and visit Fraser Island to discover the largest sand island of the world – 175km long and up to 25km wide. The North of Queensland is sparsely settled with the Cape York Peninsula difficult to access, and only inhabited by the Aborigines. More accessible are the coastal resort towns of Port Douglas, Townsville and Cairns; best visited in the dry season from April to October. The Barkly Highway is only road leading to Queensland's outback mining town of Mount Isa, tour Bundaberg, or visit farming towns – where stations are larger than some small European countries.
