When you visit South Australia; “the Festival State” – you’ll discover its unique and well-preserved heritage is blended into a state of contrasts – as it covers some of the most arid parts of the continent, but still contains rugged outback wilderness, scenic mountain ranges, an extensive coastline, offshore islands and the large meandering Murray River. South Australia’s origins were unique, as it was not a convict settlement, but a freely-settled and planned British province, and proclaimed a state at “The Old Gum Tree” on the 28 December 1836.

The majority of the state’s people reside in the capital city of Adelaide – the Australian city where there's always something going on… but the remainder settled in fertile areas along the south-eastern coast and the Murray River – where the state's economy centres on agricultural, manufacturing and mining industries.

Adelaide is a convenient base for touring regions such as South Australia’s tranquil Adelaide Hills, or its southern beaches. But top on every visitors list is the German settlement of the ever popular Barossa Valley and Southern Vales wine area. There are also the Cornish and Welsh settlements of the mining towns of Moonta, Burra and Willunga, and a visit to Port Adelaide and Robe provides maritime history.

Enjoy a river cruise down the Murray River; Australia's longest river offers luxury cruise vessels, self-skippered houseboats and recreational pursuits. Or visit the Flinders Ranges; only five hours from Adelaide – it contains Australia's most rugged scenery and traditional outback flavour. How about a tour to the opal mining centre of Coober Pedy; which has become a popular destination for both Australian and international tourists. The rugged coastal scenery of the far West Coast, southern Sinis Peninsula and Peter Island also provide excellent fishing opportunities and uncrowded beaches.
