A short guide about Tasmania

Visit the ‘Natural State’ or the "Island of Inspiration" – Tasmania is an Australian Island and State of the same name; it is home to an accessible World Heritage wilderness, dense ancient forests, beautiful beaches and lush, green rolling pastures. Located 240 kilometres south, and separated from the mainland by Bass Strait and its regional Islands; King Island and Flinder's Island. The state has an estimated population of 500,000, with almost half located in Hobart and the South-East of Tasmania.

Hobart - the capital, sits below Mt Wellington on the shores of the Derwent River. Visit this relaxed city with warm sandstone buildings, graceful old trees, heritage parks and gardens, with yachts on the water. There are also reminders of the Island's penal colony beginnings; from fine Georgian and Victorian architecture, excellent restaurants, wineries and theatre. The second main region is Launceston and South-East Tasmania, where you can visit townships like Burnie; that sit on the region of Devonport and North-West Tasmania.

Visit the East Coast of Tasmania; as it has the driest and warmest climate, and towns such as Swansea serve many of the approximately 800,000 leisure visitors to Tasmania each year. The influx of tourists, mainly in summer, also supports the West Coast of Tasmania’s towns – such as Strahan. The Midlands and Lake Country region is noted for its breathtaking scenery and trout-filled lakes. Located 1050 metres above sea level, the great lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in Australia; and with its relaxed country lifestyle, it attracts many residents to the towns of Longford and Evandale. Other centres include the historic village of Ross and the small rural towns of Campbell Town, Poatina Resort Village, Cressy and Avoca.
