A short guide about Marlborough Sounds

The Marlborough Sounds is a natural wonder on the South Island of New Zealand, it is an extensive network of sea-drowned valleys creating The Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru and Pelorus Sounds; by a combination of land subsidence and rising sea levels. According to Maori mythology, the sounds are the sunken canoe of Aoraki and his brothers.

The main channels of the Marlborough Sounds have calm water and are popular for sailing. You can also explore the many bays, coves and inlets of the Marlborough Sounds by hiring a sea kayak or by taking a guided kayaking trip. Mountain biking the Queen Charlotte Track is a ‘must do’ for any keen rider and the 71km ridge track can be easily ridden in two to three days.

Hiking, trekking or bush walking tours along the Queen Charlotte Track is also a fantastic choice. You have the opportunity to walk from shoreline to ridgeline, exploring the hidden bays and coves that make up the Marlborough Sounds. At night you can relax in the comfort of resort-style accommodation while enjoying Marlborough’s famous wines and gourmet food. But there are also plenty of camping grounds where you can stay in huts or tents if you fancy roughing it a bit.
