A short guide about Belize City
Journey south to Central America’s smallest country - Belize, formally known as the British Honduras. The official language is still English but almost everyone speaks Spanish. Situated on the east coast and the travel hub of the country; Belize City is filled with history and interesting sights to explore. One highlight is the only manual swing bridge in the world and is still being swung daily.
Belize City is the starting point to visit many attractions; there is the relaxing Placencia, the adventurous Cockscomb Basin, the Jaguar Reserve and mysterious archaeological sites such as Caracol and Xunantunic, as well as the interesting Mountain Pine Ridge.
Take a speedboat out to Caye (island) Caulker - there are no cars on the island, only bikes and golf buggies. Here you can throw away your shoes to wander the sandy streets, bars and restaurants. There are optional snorkelling and scuba diving trips that can be arranged, one tour goes to Hol-Chan Marine Reserve and another excursion takes you to see the local manatees (also known as sea cows). Most tours include a stop at shark and ray alley. Qualified divers can explore the so-called bottomless "Blue Hole" made famous by the explorer Jacques Cousteau.
Tourabout has tours to Belize City and the popular Caye Caulker Island’s docks; where evenings may be spent watching the tide going out, eating fresh lobster and prawns, sipping on coconut rum and pineapple cocktails while listening to reggae music with the friendly locals…
