A short guide about Prague

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, Prague has become one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations, as millions of travellers want to visit one of the most beautiful cities in the world – Prague. Situated on the Vltava River in Central Bohemia the capital of the Czech Republic has been the political, cultural, and economic centre for more than 1100 years.

When you visit Prague you’ll discover that it grew from the Vysehrad Castle to the multicultural capital it is today. This extensive historic city has inspired many to nickname it; "the mother of cities", "city of a hundred spires" and "the golden city" – so it’s no surprise that in 1992 Prague was added to the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. As Prague suffered less damage than other major cities during World War II its historic architecture contains some of the world's most pristine and varied collections – so popular sites to tour are the; Old Town with the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square, and the picturesque Charles Bridge.

A tour of Prague Castle will lead you to the biggest ancient castle in the world containing the site of the St Vitus Cathedral with its lookout tower, offering beautiful views of the city. It is here where the legendary etymology connects the name of the city with the prophetess ‘Libuse’; who is said to have ordered the city built “where a man stood on the threshold of his house” – this has lead to its magical character; with the belief that Prague lies on the threshold of other worlds and dimensions.

Visit the vaulted gothic Old New Synagogue built in 1270, and New Town with its busy and historic Wenceslas Square. Tour the Mala Strana in the Lesser Quarter with its Infant Jesus of Prague, and the Josefov in the old Jewish quarter, with the Old Jewish Cemetery. Or maybe visit the Metronome; a giant functional scenic vista and the Dancing House that is the Fred and Ginger Building.
