A short guide about Salzburg

Visit the city of Salzburg in central Austria near the German/Bavarian border – and if you’ve seen the movie The Sound of Music, you too may want to burst into song while you're walking along the Salzach River, or climbing up to the Hohensalzburg Castle which looms over the city. But there's a lot more to this compact, courtly city than Julie Andrews and Mozart's birthplace. And Yes – they also love Football; as the city was one of the eight host cities in the 2008 European Football Championships.

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and meaning "Salt Castle", the name Salzburg was derived from the barges carrying salt on the Salzach River. This "Old Town" with its world famous baroque architecture is one of the best-preserved city centres in the German-speaking world. Salzburg dates back to the 15 BC and was known by the Romans as Juvavum, the city's fortress; the Hohensalzburg Castle was built in 1077 and expanded during the following centuries, and finally independence from Bavaria was secured in the late 14th century.

Salzburg has a host of things explore – so why not take the time to tour the Hellbrunn Palace; that was once an archbishop's summer palace with lots of clever fountains and pretty gardens, or tour the Getreidegasse; a long yet narrow street with lots of shops famous for its old-style signs outside each store.

Visit Mozarts Geburtshaus; the house where Mozart himself was born on 27 January 1756, now a popular museum devoted to Mozart and his family. Maybe you would like to get married in the Marble Hall of Schloss Mirabell, or the Garden of Dwarfs and the Garden of Roses. Reservations should be made at least a year in advance, and weddings in English are only held on Tuesday and Friday.
