A short guide about Vatican Museums

Take a tour to Rome and visit the Vatican Museums in Viale Vaticano. Founded by Pope Julius II in the 16th century, The Vatican City has some of the greatest museums in the world, as they display works from an immense collection built up by the Roman Catholic Church throughout the centuries, and as of 2007 – they were visited by 4,310,083 people for the year.

The Vatican Museums contain masterpieces of painting, sculpture and other works of art collected by the popes through the centuries. There are also several monumental works of art – such as the Sistine Chapel, the Chapel of Beato Angelico, the Raphael Rooms and Loggia and the Borgia Apartment.

Make sure you take time out to visit the Pinacoteca (Picture Gallery), designed by the architect Beltrami. The Christian, Profane and Missionary-Ethnological Museum contains a collection of artistic and archaeological objects, some of an ethnological nature, that were once housed in the Lateran Palace. Visit the Collection of Modern Religious Art that was added to the Museums in 1973 and the History Museum located in the Lateran Palace. Tour through the ‘Workshop, it’s worth visiting to see how they restore paintings, bronzes, marble and tapestries, this part of the Museum also includes a Scientific Research Laboratory.

Tourabout’s catalogue of tours to Vatican Museum and Sistine Chapel in Rome also visit St Peter’s Square and Basilica, the Colosseum and Roman Forum. The Vatican Museums are usually open to the public every weekday morning and in the early afternoon in summer. And every last Sunday of every month entry is free.
