A short guide about Kodiak Island

Kodiak Island belongs to Alaska’s beautiful Emerald Isle – which is rich in culture, natural resources, wildlife and scenic beauty. So if your thinking of visiting Alaska – then come and visit the Island and city of Kodiak, all those that visit say it “stirs the hearts and souls of all who are lucky enough to experience this unique island.”

Belonging to the Kodiak Archipelago; Kodiak Island is mountainous and heavily forested in the north and east, but fairly treeless on the south. The island has many deep, ice-free bays that provide sheltered anchorages for boats. The southwestern two-thirds of the island, like much of the Kodiak Archipelago, is part of Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge.

When touring the Kodiak Archipelago you’ll find that the area presents abundant wildlife viewing opportunities with its many islands of rocky cliffs, marshy lowlands and forests. Go on a bird tour to view more than 215 species of birds, or view brown bears in their natural habitat while they feed on salmon or dig for clams. Also the lush vegetation that carpets the island makes hiking a great experience as well as biking.

But the best thing to do while in Kodiak is to go kayaking – as you are paddling through waters with thousands of years of history. The Alutiiq people, who occupied the island 10,000 years ago, navigated the Aleutian Isle waters in skin-covered kayaks before finding Kodiak Island. Here they discovered an area rich in marine life, a place warmed by Japanese trade winds, and a multitude of quiet bays to seek refuge.
