A short guide about Peru

If you love "French Fries" with your burgers, you should know that the potato originated in Peru – the mighty Incas cultivated potatoes in the high altitude of the Andes – But before the times of the Inca Empire; the mighty Urubamba River carved a fertile valley from the mountains east of Cuzco which fed the local population.

You do not need to be a history buff to enjoy Peru. Of late, thousands of people have dared to visit The Amazon in search of cures for the world's illnesses, by tapping into the knowledge of Shamans medicine men. Some tourists will find the high jungle plateau tends to have a slightly lower humidity level than the lower Amazon Basin, but you can have a reasonably comfortable trip into the deeps of the jungle from Iquitos. Visit Tarapoto for the trade centre in the district of San Martin with daily flights from the capital of Lima.

Discover how 10,000 years of history can be seen in one of the largest networks of archeology found in the world – like in Caral; the oldest city of the Americas; or tour Machu Picchu; hidden in the Sacred Valley. Travel there by train from Cuzco passing through the Misty Cloud Forest of the Urubamba Valley, or walk in by the Inca Trail on a trekking tour; a journey that retraces the steps of the ancient Inca civilization into the lost city via the Sun Gate.

The majestic Andean Condors are attracting more visitors each year to 'Cruz del Condor' at the Colca Canyon; a popular tourist spot to view the condors. Visit the Santa Catalina Monastery built in 1580 which has become Arequipa’s prime tourist attraction. Travel to Paracas Bay, located close to Pisco, and organize a boat trip to the Ballestas Islands to tour the Paracas National Reserve.
